Facial Bones of Domestic Animals
The facial bones form the framework of the face and contribute to the formation of the oral cavity, nasal cavity, orbit and jaws. These bones support important structures involved in mastication, respiration and protection of sensory organs.
In domestic animals, the arrangement and shape of facial bones may vary among species, but their basic anatomical components remain similar. Most facial bones are paired, while a few remain single bones situated in the median plane.
The facial bones are named as following:
- Nasal bone
- Premaxilla bone
- Maxilla bone
- Palatine bone
- Pterygoid bone
- Lacrimal bone
- Malar bone or Zygomatic bone
- Turbinate bone
- Vomer bone
- Mandible bone
- Hyoid bone
Vomer, Mandible and Hyoid bones are single bones and remaining facial bones are paired.
