Pantoprazole
Pantoprazole is a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor). Pantoprazole for animals used in acid hypersecretory condition which reduce acid secretion and protect Gastro intestinal Mucosa.
Group
Pantoprazole is grouped in Proton Pump Inhibitor or Anti-acidic Medicine.
Mechanism of Action
Pantoprazole act by inhibiting Proton pump that is responsible for acid production. PPIs has potent and long-acting effects and are more effective than H2-blockers (Ranitidine).
Dose Rates
Dog & Cat: 1 mg/kg IV PO q24h
Horse: 1.5 mg/kg IV PO q24h
Cattle, Sheep and Goats: 0.5 mg/kg IV q24h
Indications
- Gastric ulcers and Duodenal Ulcers
- Gastrinoma
- Mast Cell Neoplasia
Contraindications
- Intramuscular (IM) and Subcutaneous (SC) routes are contraindicated for pantoprazole.
Interactions
- Never combine Pantoprazole to medications that need stomach acid for absorption like ketoconazole, itraconazole and iron supplements.
Adverse effects
- No Side effects reported in animals.
Toxicity
>300mg/kg body weight dose is toxic to animals. symptomatic treatment is followed in such case.
Preparations
Injectables: 40mg vial
Tablets: 10mg, 20mg, 40mg
Note
Other Proton Pump inhibitor medicines are omeprazole, esomeprazole, Lansoprazole, and Rabeprazole.
These Medicines are also used along with NSAIDs and Corticosteroids (NSAIDs and Corticosteroids are prone of GI Ulcers)
