Obstetrical Operation

Obstetrical Operation and Procedures

The principal purpose of obstetrical operation is to deliver a viable fetus and to prevent injury to the dam.

The obstetrical operations may be divided into four major classifications:

  1. Mutation operation
  2. Forced extraction
  3. Fetotomy or embryotomy
  4. Cesarean section

1. Mutation Operation

Mutation operation is defined as an operation by which a fetus is returned to a normal presentation, position, and posture by repulsion, rotation, version, and adjustment or extension of extremities.

2. Forced Extraction

Forced extraction is defined as the removal of the fetus from the dam through the birth canal by applying external force or traction.

3. Fetotomy or Embryotomy

Fetotomy or embryotomy is defined as an operation performed on the fetus to reduce its size by either dividing it or removing certain parts.

4. Cesarean Section

Cesarean section is the delivery of the fetus, usually at parturition, by laparohysterotomy. This operation is performed when mutation, forced extraction, and fetotomy are deemed inadequate or too difficult to relieve the present dystocia, or when it is desired that the fetus be delivered alive.
