Lamb Dysentery and Pine (Enterotoxemia Type B)
Lamb Dysentery and Pine (Enterotoxemia Type B) is seen in older lambs and consist focal areas of necrosis produced in the small intestine.
Etiology
- C. perfringens isolates are categorized in to type A-E as based on their ability to produce alpha, beta, epsilon, and Iota toxins.
- These toxins are important to exert their effect in developing pathogenesis.
- Clostridium perfringen is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacteria.
Epidemiology
Prevalence of infection
- The organism prevalils in animal housing environment and as normal inhabitant in the alimentary tract of healthy animals.
- It is widely prevalent in other countries and lesser exxtent in India.
Predisposing factors
- Poor management factors prodisposes the disease.
- Well nourished animals are affected more.
Sources of infection
- Infected soil, environment, infected animals, and aerosol infection.
