Fading Puppy Syndrome
Puppies fail to thrive and ultimately die soon after birth. There is neonatal death up to 2 weeks of age, commonly between days 3rd to 5th after birth.
Fading Puppy Syndrome due to
- Under weight
- Hypothermia Puppy shows (96° F to 100°F)
- Hypoglycemia
- Dehydration, Poor mothering behaviour
- Dystocia, Immune insufficiency
- Low lung Suffocation: Phosphatidylcholine is the lung surfactant for normal respiration adoption and maintains respiration immediately after birth. If low lung surfactant it cause hypoxia and death.
- Infections: Herpes, distemper and hepatitis, Neonatal sepsis, Hook worm and Round worm infestation.
Clinical Signs
- Progressive weight loss, Persistent crying
- Fails to suck, Generalised weakness
- Dehydration Hypothermia
- Ultimately die
Control and Management
- Warm up the puppy up to 97 to 98 F.
- Inject warm fluid 1 ml per 30gm body weight S/C or I/P or 5-10% glucose 0.25ml/30gm.
- Antibiotics: Penicillin’s are the choice (Cephalexin).
