Fading Puppy Syndrome

Puppies fail to thrive and ultimately die soon after birth. There is neonatal death up to 2 weeks of age, commonly between days 3rd to 5th after birth.

Fading Puppy Syndrome due to

  • Under weight
  • Hypothermia Puppy shows (96° F to 100°F)
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Dehydration, Poor mothering behaviour
  • Dystocia, Immune insufficiency
  • Low lung Suffocation: Phosphatidylcholine is the lung surfactant for normal respiration adoption and maintains respiration immediately after birth. If low lung surfactant it cause hypoxia and death.
  • Infections: Herpes, distemper and hepatitis, Neonatal sepsis, Hook worm and Round worm infestation.

Clinical Signs

  • Progressive weight loss, Persistent crying
  • Fails to suck, Generalised weakness
  • Dehydration Hypothermia
  • Ultimately die

Control and Management

  • Warm up the puppy up to 97 to 98 F.
  • Inject warm fluid 1 ml per 30gm body weight S/C or I/P or 5-10% glucose 0.25ml/30gm.
  • Antibiotics: Penicillin’s are the choice (Cephalexin).
