Cervicitis
Cervicitis is the inflammation of the cervix. It commonly accompanies metritis and chronic irritation associated with pneumovagina or urovagina.
Etiology
- Commonly accompanies metritis.
- Chronic irritation associated with pneumovagina or urovagina.
- Injudicious attempts to pass instruments through the cervical canal.
- May follow obstetric trauma.
Clinical signs
Rectal Examination
- Enlarge and / or indurated cervix.
Vaginal Examination
- Swelling and edema of the external os of the cervix.
- Hyperemia of the mucosa.
- Presence of mucopurulent exudates within the cervical canal and the cranial vagina.
- Prolapsed of the caudal one or two cervical rings is common in pluriparous animals and is not associated with infertility.
- Hypertrophy of the cervix is a normal consequence of parturition in Bos indicus cows and their crosses.
- Chronic and severe irritation of the cervix by caustic chemical or pathogenic bacteria may lead to fibrosis and stenosis and cause infertility.
Treatment
- Systematic antibiotic therapy.
- Treatment of associated metritis.
- Surgical correction for pneumovagina or urovagina.
- Daily irrigation of the affected parts using some mild, non-irritating antiseptic, taking care to sterilize all apparatus immediately after use, is generally recommended. 1/200 acriflavine or 1/250 zinc sulphate can be used. Slightly hypertonic saline or 1 per cent formalin twice or thrice weekly could help.
