Applications of Biomechanics

  1. The study of biomechanics ranges from the function of a cell to the movement and development of limbs, to the mechanical properties of soft tissue, and bones. Hence, it helps to advance the field of tissue engineering, as well as develop improved treatments for a wide array of pathological conditions.
  2. Biomechanics is also applied in studying the musculo-skeletal systems. In recent years, research applied force platform to study the animal joint reaction forces, 3D movement. Motion is also captured through the Motion capture systems (e.g. Vicon systems) to study 3D motion with the help of force platform and vicon systems. It is possible to study the musculo-skeletal behavior, including joint reaction forces, postural control etc.
  3. Biomechanics is widely used in orthopaedic industry to design orthopedic implants for joints, dental parts, external fixations and other medical purposes. Biotribology is a very important part of it. It is a study of the performance and function of biomaterials used for orthopaedic implants. It plays a vital role in order to improve the design and produce successful biomaterials for medical and clinical purposes.
  4. Used in the treatment and management of lameness.
  5. Used as Index for draft power.
  6. Sire index in the selection of draft animals by a breeder.
  7. Helps in conservation of native germplasm of draft animals.
