Analeptics drugs in animals

Analeptics drugs in animals are the drug these stimulates central nervous system and respiratory system. used in coma or fainting but may cause convulsions and not safe to use.

Clinical uses of analeptics as respiratory stimulation

  • In hypnotic drug poisoning in the absence of mechanical ventilation
  • Suffocation on drowning
  • Apnoea in infant
  • Failure to ventilate spontaneously after GA

Drugs of respiratory analeptics

Doxapram

Doxapram is used to stimulate respiration in postanaesthetic period, to reverse barbiturate depression or inhalant anaesthetic depression. this used in dog, cat and horse

Nikethamide

Nikethamide is similar to doxapram. this drug is no longer used because of respiratory suppression.

Note

For ordinary fainting – reflex stimulation with smelling of ammonia or alcohol is enough – no need for analeptics.
